Etymology
From Middle Persian (āzād, “free, noble”). Compare modern Persian آزاد (āzād, “free”) and Avestan (āzāta, “noble”), composed of the preverb (ā-) and the participle (zāta-, “born”) from the root (zān-, “to give birth to”).
