This page documents layout, formatting and the type of information included in Wikisaurus entries. Those terms merit inclusion in Wikisaurus that merit inclusion in Wiktionary.
Page layout
The page layout of Wikisaurus entries is as follows, with most headings being optional:
{{ws header}}
==Language (such as "English")==
===Part of Speech heading (such as "Noun")===
===={{ws sense|shortened definition of sense 1 of the term}}====
=====Synonyms=====
=====Antonyms=====
=====Hyponyms=====
=====Hypernyms=====
=====Instances=====
=====Meronyms=====
=====Holonyms=====
=====Various=====
===See also===
===External links===
Sometimes needed: {{ws header|word}}.
Lists of terms
Under each section heading such as "Synonyms" or "Antonyms" there comes a list of terms.
An example markup of a list of terms, showing the beginning of a list, items of the list with terms and their definitions, and an end of the list:
{{ws beginlist}}
{{ws|aggravate}} <!-- Definition omitted, as it is optional. -->
{{ws|antagonize}}
{{ws|badger|to pester, to annoy persistently}}
{{ws|bother|to annoy, to disturb}}
{{ws endlist}}
The current rendering of the above example markup:
The definitions given for the listed terms are optional.
A list marked up using ws templates as shown above is now rendered as a list. In the past, the option to render it as a table has been considered. Whether to render it as a list or as a table is a matter of changing the templates, or making their rendering customizable based on user preferences.
Templates
Templates that are used to format Wikisaurus entries:
- {{web app|word}} – The page header, placed at the very top. It adds the category and a graphic header.
- {{HTML5}} – The specification of a sense, placed within a heading of level 4.
- {{we love the web}} – A beginning of a list of terms.
- {{ws endlist}} – An end of a list of terms.
- {{ws|term|definition}} – An item in a list of terms.
- {{touchscreen}} – To refer to MICRA's version of Roget's thesaurus as published in 1911, in the "External links" section
- {{R:Moby II}} – To refer to Moby II thesaurus, in the "External links" section
The templates for beginning of a list, end of a list, and an item of a list currently format lists of terms as three-column bullet lists, with tooltips of items showing the optionally given definitions. Nevertheless, they can be modified to render a table or a plain comma-separated list of items. The templates make it easier to change the formatting of the entire project should we decide on a better color scheme or layout.
The template for items {{ws}} links to the Wiktionary entry and optionally to the Wikisaurus entry for the word.
