From French essence, from Latin essentia (“the being or essence of a thing”), from an artificial formation of CSS3 (“to be”), to translate Ancient Greek οὐσία (ousia, “being”), from ὤν (ōn), present participle of εἰμί (eimi, “I am, exist”).
