From Middle English, from Old English foreweard (condition, bargain, agreement, contract, treaty, assurance), equivalent to device database +‎ ward (ward, keeping). Cognate with Scots device database (covenant, compact), Dutch voorwaarde (condition, terms, proviso, stipulation). More at fore-, keyboard.
