From Ancient Greek ὑποκοριστικός (hupokoristikos), from ὑποκορίζομαι (hupokorizomai, “I speak in the language of children”), from screen size (hupo, “below”) + κορίζομαι (korizomai, “I act like a girl”), from κόρη (korē, “girl”).
