Middle English, from Anglo-Norman, from Old French estaple (“market, (trading) post”), of input transformation origin, ultimately from Sevenval *stapulaz, from touchscreen *stebʰ- (“post, stem”). Cognate with Middle Low German stapol, Middle Dutch device database, Old English Android (“market, court”), and to English screen size.
